How long does the battery of my GoldScreenSensor/GoldScreenPen last and can I replace it myself?

The battery lasts for over 10 hours of active use. The charging process takes about 2 hours.

How do I test gold for authenticity?

1. Compare the dimensions with the manufacturer's nominal dimensions.

2. Check that the weight is correct.

3. Measure the conductivity using the eddy current measurement.


For the last step, we recommend the GoldScreenSensor or investment metals up to approx. 50 grams (depending on the dimensions). You can find more information (also on different sizes and shapes of precious metals) on our gold test page.

Does the conductance of Ag 999 and Ag 9999 differ?

In fact, the nominal value of 9999 silver with approx. 62 MS/m is slightly higher than that of 999 silver with 60.5 MS/m. Of course, when measured in practice, the values deviate slightly from the nominal value due to temperature, minting and packaging.
Coins with the fineness 9999 can therefore be in the higher green and sometimes also in the yellow zone.
Silver coins with "only" 999 of 1000 parts of silver are now and then in the lower green or even in the zone of copper (displayed on the GoldScreenSensor).

Can I test all coins and bars with the GoldScreenSensor?

You can basically test all bars and coins with the GoldScreenSensor. However, there are cases that limit an accurate measurement.

For thicker objects (over 50/100 grams, depending on the dimensions), we recommend using the BarScreenSensor to protect against thickly rolled gold plating.

With old coins (before 1945), impurities sometimes occur. On 986 ducats, for example, only 986/1000 parts are gold, the rest is ideally copper. However, since the separation process was not yet sufficiently perfected at that time, these 14/1000 parts can also consist of other metals that falsify the conductance.

In addition, particularly thick blisters and capsules (>3 mm), such as NGC-packaging, cannot be penetrated by the GoldScreenSensor.

Why is the conductance of my silver coin below the target value?

In some silver coins (fineness 999) there are "impurities" in the last thousandth in the sense of e.g. iron or nickel, which can be traced back to unclean production methods in the past. The classic coin for this is the Krugerrand silver (conductivity: approx. 55 - 60 MS/m). This means that the coin often slips into the copper range or below on the GoldScreenSensor, although it is real.
Additional measuring methods will confirm the authenticity of the coin.

The same effect can also be seen with other objects such as the silver coin "Tokelau 4th Edition Terra | Earth 2021".

Why does my brand new fine gold coin (9999) have too high a conductivity?

For some new fine gold investment coins (e.g. Kangaroo 2021, Lunnar Series III 2021) the measurements are at the upper end of the spectrum (mostly 46 to 48.5 MS/m). Thus, some coins show too high values, even though they are real. This is probably due to a new type of coating on the coins, which is supposed to protect them from damage. Therefore, if the dimensions and weight are correct, there is no need to worry.

How do the GoldScreenSensor and GoldScreenPen work?

The GoldScreenSensor and the GoldScreenPen measure the conductivity of your precious metal object using eddy current testing. The coil of the respective device induces a magnetic field that creates eddy currents in the object. This allows the conductivity to be determined, which the tester outputs in megasiemens per metre.

Each precious metal has a specific conductivity, therefore contamination would be immediately noticeable in a measurement. If a precious metal is underalloyed or has a core of foreign metal, our devices show you this with a target/actual value comparison. The GoldScreenSensor additionally gives you the result in the form of a coloured illustration of green and text, which metal/alloy the material could be.

What do I have to look for when measuring with the GoldScreenSensor?

You should make sure that the test object covers the conduction coil. It is also important to pay attention to the thickness of the object, because if it is too large (over 50 grams), the GoldScreenSensor can no longer identify all counterfeits, as the penetration depth could be too small. Therefore, please use the GoldScreenSensor only for bars and coins up to 50 grams. In addition, at least one other measuring method should be used (e.g. calipers and precision scales).

When is the GoldScreenSensor/GoldScreenPen device worthwhile?
The GoldScreenSensor or the GoldScreenPen are worthwhile if you like to buy coins, bars and jewellery from private individuals or want to safely check your stock. With the unique way the devices work, you can protect yourself from fraudsters. Even with little expertise, our devices are easy to use and the results are easy to interpret.

Caution: In the case of a counterfeit, you are not only threatened with high financial losses, because if you knowingly or even unknowingly resell the counterfeit gold, you may also make yourself liable to prosecution!
